Riviersonderend: Oumeul Bakery has the Best Pies

I heard plenty of rumours about the "the best pie shop in the Southern hemisphere" being located in the stopover town of Riviersonderend on the N2. I can confirm that this is in fact, true.

For years road trippers have been stopping at the Oumeul pie shop for a cup of coffe (coffee is average) and a homemade pie. The pie shop is an underground secret known only to frequent road trippers.

As you come into Riviersonderend heading up from Cape Town you'll see Oumeul on your left hand-side adjacent to a petrol station. There is also a Biltong shop offering a selection of sausage and flavoured biltong.

But, more about the pies ! Today I tried the bobotie pie (bobotie is a traditional South African meal), the vennison pie and the mutton curry. The pies are stuffed with filling and the pastry is really tasty. For 4 pies and 2 coffees it came to R118.

A pretty good deal ! The only downfall - there are no vegetarian pies! They also have plenty of traditional South African baked goods on offer such as Milk Tart and Koeksisters. If you're a vegetarian, I hope you have a sweet tooth because this town loves their meat.

If you're road tripping outside of Cape Town, make sure you have an empty stomach when you hit Riviersonderend. And yes, I did eat all the pies.
