Aromas of mocha coffees, wafts of homebrewed beers coupled with rich aromatic spices create an atmosphere that thrills the olfactory nerves and excites the salivating palate. Welcome to the latest food market to hit Cape Town - the
VA Waterfront's Fresh Food Market on the Wharf.
Located next to the Two Oceans Aquarium in the old Musica block, this food extravaganza is nestled inside a retro warehouse. There are two levels of food, baked goods, global cuisine, local spices, meats and funky kitchenware. It's the perfect spot for a saturday afternoon.
Wooden tables line the upstair loft area which overlooks the food stalls. The entrie area is really neat, clean and well-laid out. I would say it's more modern and clean cut than bohemian. If David Beckham was a market he'd be the Waterfront market. If Johnny Depp was a market he'd be the Bluebird market in Muizenberg. That's the best personification I have for these markets.
I spent Sat lunch time chugging back cherry beers and feasting on Pad-thai, curried Kumquats, Dim sum, Nutella rice krispy pancakes. I'm glad the Waterfront launched this little gem of a market. Restaurants, just like scrunchies, are so 90's - useful, but just not trendy. Fact is, Cape Town has a massive food market following and it's so much a part of local culture that it seems fitting the largest visited tourist hotspot develop a food market.
What an idyllic little spot for hipsters from around the globe. I'm still full from all the food I ate and will hold this place responsible for any weight I gain in the upcoming months. Will definitely go back to this
funky fresh food market at the VA Waterfront.
